Hunting and Faceting "Montana Diamonds" and Quality SMOKY QUARTZ Crystals with Katydid ROCKS!

Hunting and Faceting "Montana Diamonds" and Quality SMOKY QUARTZ Crystals with Katydid ROCKS!

In this one, we head out to a well known sight in central Montana to hunt for Quartz crystals! These unusual crystals are a type of doubly terminated squat crystal referred to as Montana Diamonds due to their extremely uniform shape. We spend some time loading up on these awesome specimens before heading up the road where we stumbled upon one pleasant surprise: small but incredible dark Smoky Quartz crystals! It was such an awesome hunt and I cannot wait to get back up there! After returning to the shop, I test a theory and use the fossil scribe to excavate some Montana diamonds, and then we wrap up by faceting a few! I hope you all enjoy this one, and look forward to more coming soon!

Does acid eat up the crystals?

  5. Marcia Lander on September 19, 2022 at 9:56 pm

Awesome finds. Can you mount you faceted stones in ring settings? Faceting vid sounds good with lots of fast forwarding! But time spent at each grit would be good info, too. Thanks for the hint about running cabs in the tumbler.

  6. Ginger MacKeen on September 19, 2022 at 9:56 pm

Thanks for all the extra panaramic shots. Beautiful country!

  7. Vonda Barela on September 19, 2022 at 9:58 pm

Very cool video! Especially enjoyed the faceting. Sure hope to find some really good crystals myself one day. Thank you.

Since this location is so far away would it be possible to camp there overnight?

  9. Adventure Sam & Fam on September 19, 2022 at 10:01 pm

I just found your channel but please do more faceting videos.

    Congratulations you deserve it
I loved looking at all the Crystal’s

  12. Donna Lantz on September 19, 2022 at 10:08 pm

Sooooo cool. I would love to learn how facet gemstones and crystals. You always have such great videos. I love all the stuff you find. And those facets you do are so spectacular. How did you learn your crafts, not only with rocks but gemstones, and shells? I guess that’s actually multiple questions. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait for the next video.

  13. Bebo Frazier on September 19, 2022 at 10:09 pm

What is the tool your speaking of…? Scribe…?

  14. Brandon Whitmyre on September 19, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Feel lucky that you live where you do, you step over rocks that I die for in Ohio

  15. David Santos on September 19, 2022 at 10:09 pm

i would like to see more about faceting. i took a class on it in Quartsite az. but it was years ago.

  16. Puffin Vapor on September 19, 2022 at 10:10 pm

I just started enjoying all the different Chrystal , Gem & Rock hounding videos. I’m guessing that rather than forming in vuggs, these Chrystals formed in a kind of mud that eventually hardened into rock before the Chrystals could grow any larger? Fun channel, thank you!

  17. JellysweetcatLOL on September 19, 2022 at 10:10 pm

Where can I go to find cool rocks by the Minnesota border?

  18. drhexagonapus on September 19, 2022 at 10:11 pm

Those are really reminiscent of garnets in matrix , at least to me

  19. Ange F on September 19, 2022 at 10:11 pm

Beautiful finds Theo! I would love to see a faceting video. You are so talented and my question(s) for a potential Q&A video are: When did you become fascinated in rocks & fossils? Where did you learn to facet gems? And where do you see yourself in 5 years? Thank you for another amazing video! I love when you let your true self shine in your videos as you have a wonderful personality and sense of humor.

  20. Scott Peters on September 19, 2022 at 10:11 pm

Very intressting and entertaining crystal hunt,
Yes I would like to see more gem cutting,
And would love if you could explain more about the geology of what you find,
Keep up the good work Theo,

  21. Just Julee on September 19, 2022 at 10:14 pm

I want a faceting video!! What equipment is needed to do cabs? Minimum tools needed is what I mean.

  22. alicia lifford on September 19, 2022 at 10:15 pm

Definitely would love a faceting video

  23. Mette Udengaard on September 19, 2022 at 10:15 pm

Would sandblasting ruin the crystal? Maybe it can clean them up better. Love your videos❤️

  24. Paige Lee on September 19, 2022 at 10:16 pm

Interesting your tumbling those crystals I think it would break them up,

  25. Gwynn Farrell on September 19, 2022 at 10:21 pm

That Montana sky is a gorgeous blue! What an incredible vista! Do the squat crystals form in the cooling lava rather than in vugs like the regular quartz crystals? Very cool video! Congratulations on reaching 10K+!

  26. Aidan on September 19, 2022 at 10:22 pm

Mount those in a little perky box with a label and some mineral putty!

  27. alczek on September 19, 2022 at 10:23 pm

Great videos far beyond my capacity. Can you suggest a kight to look into crystals and agates. I have AMD and at my last eye shot the Doc saw damage to my retina, slight, as if I had looked at the sun.
I immediately knew it was from the mag light I use. I’m not sure that’s been mentioned as a concern.
    What light do you suggest?
I’ve been at this for less than a year and now can say I’m proud of some of my polishing accomplishments and just cut my first rock. Material was nothing great but the finish was like glass.
I have to credit you folks on You Tube for teaching me. Michigan Rocks is the man although scientists have proven UM colors cause hair loss. Just kidding he’s the Boss but went to my rival.

  28. Ken Skill on September 19, 2022 at 10:28 pm

Yes please to a faceting video.

  29. Ozone Fine Art-Ventures on September 19, 2022 at 10:29 pm

So much awesomeness, you might need an awesome-o-meter next time. I love that you faceted those quartz, and love saying porphyry, just a satisfying word. Prepping the crystals with the scribe, next level. Looks like such a good time, thanks for sharing.

  30. Grace Englund on September 19, 2022 at 10:30 pm

Judith mountain? You know in the Judith basin area Yogo sapphires have been found? It would be neat to see you finding some of those.

nice spot ! can acid eat them out or just easier to hand hunt ?

  35. Karen Durjan on September 19, 2022 at 10:36 pm

I have a question for you. I inherited a lot,lot of rocks. My late mother n law loved to paint rocks. How can I remove paint from fossils. She painted a large fossil of coral with whites and blue. I think she used acrylic paint. I don’t want to hurt it. Please, do you know how?

  36. Rebecca of Sunny Brookefarm on September 19, 2022 at 10:37 pm
