Have You Ever Seen The Steamboat Tourmaline Before? #gems #famous

Unearthed in 1907 the steamboat tourmaline has been a favorite to visitors of the Smithsonian Institute for many, many years. This multicolored specimen is tourmaline bursting out of cleavelandite that sits atop a large quartz crystal. This piece was mined from the Tourmaline King Mine in San Diego County California. A mine that produced 8 tons of pink tourmalines. Many of which were sold to china and turned into fancy buttons.

    Looks like watermelon and green apple jolly ranchers to me, but I see how they came to the name way back when
