Essential Oil Safety (and Are Essential Oil Diffusers Safe?): http://bit.ly/2ShOEKX

Essential oils have been shown in studies to have very few negative side effects or risks when they are used as directed. But given how popular essential oils have become in recent years, and how many different brands of oils are now available, it’s not surprising that there’s some growing concerns regarding essential oil safety.

On this episode of Ancient Medicine Today, I’m talking about the top 10 mistakes people make with essential oils as well as internal use, topical use, and aromatic use.

If anyone has birds, please don’t use essential oils. They are one of many things that could kill your birds if inhaled, since their respiratory systems are very sensitive.

I use spearmint and tea tree currently. I ran out of eucalyptus. In a diffuser.

Essential Oil companies need to be sued. There are no warnings on the small bottles and or no warning pamphlet to test the oils or dilute the oil first. My skin was burned on my the top of my foot badly by a big drop of ‘Peppermint Oil’ coming out of the bottle that dropped on the top of my bare foot. I wiped the big drop of oil away but it did not help. It is so painful since it is a 2nd degree burn!! And the top of my foot scared badly without going in the sun!! I also broke out in hives for almost a week from the oil on my foot, leg, hands and wrists. I will never use essential oils again. I did go to my doctor and I need to go again since my skin on top of my foot is so thin, red, scared, scaling and incredibly painful after 6 long weeks!!

Internal use of essential oils IS effective – so, folks must research! BTW: Due to "geo-engineering" (manipulating/contaminating) our entire environment – one must learn how Nano-sized metals ARE now saturating all things, and, being SO tiny, the particles in men & women DO break the blood-brain barrier — But, can be removed.

Question: Do essential oils work if you have no sense of smell? Especially those used for aromatherapy.
I have no sense of smell and have wondered if essential oils can help me. Those that I’ve tried I can’t tell if the work or not.

So what about oils in a diffuser or humidifier?

  21. YAHsgirl2911 * on March 1, 2022 at 1:11 am

Tea tree oil is toxic for pets – please don’t diffuse in your home if you have pets.

Lavender is the best “go to” oil for literally everything! I use this on my dogs too. And this one is safe for babies.

I agree that oils should be of excellent quality and they should cost more than what is at the grocery store.

I’ve been using oils for almost 6 years now and absolutely love them and don’t use any OTC.

    Shalom and blessings.

I am a DO and have spent more than two decades in complementary medicine, with background and educational background in several forms of western, Ayurvedic and other forms of medicine and associated treatment. You have covered some of the issues here with EO’s. There are several more. EO’s are potentially powerful tools, but they are powerful, and unfortunately there is virtually zero oversight on their formulation, production or use.

We work with a lab that uses gas chromatography and mass spec equipment on samples of any product we evaluate or use. From 2007 to 2021 we found that well over 90% of essential oils had pesticides and/or one or more cancer causing agents. Some sources that were initially ‘clean’ had to be eliminated when subsequent deliveries had toxicity issues. This is especially critical because of the small relative size of essential oil molecules which allows them to pass quickly into the blood stream, often along with other dangerous substances. The high concentration of real essential oils— many are actually synthetic rather than naturally sourced— means that they can quickly reach toxic levels.

Most states in the US see hundreds to thousands of EO related toxic and related damage related admissions every year. Practitioners and others often think they’re safe to use and too often apply several or more drops a day of one or more essential oils. Essential oils can be very powerful medicine, but can quickly become dangerous because they rapidly reach the blood stream, and because they include fat solubles, they build up in the liver, brain and elsewhere— reaching toxic levels if not very careful.

Even discounting the fact that none have any level of FDA or related oversight, and that many have concentrated levels of pesticides and cancer causing agents, the build-up that happens subsequent to using even a few drops topically every day over long periods are becoming increasing associated with numerous cancer and other serious health issues. There are numerous papers and studies on this subject that practitioners should make themselves aware of before recommending/prescribing or using essential oils.

Unfortunately, too many naturopaths and other practitioners don’t have the background in toxicology, nor do they stay abreast of the research to know how to determine the small group that are safe for a given individual in the correct dosage. Women, especially younger though mid-40’s, have to be especially careful due to strong hormonal up/down regulation inherent to many EO’s. This coupled with higher levels of breast and other fatty tissues that can accumulate fat soluble chemicals including EO’s have been directly associated with various long term disorders, cancer and other issues. There are many thousands of people every single year admitted to hospitals due to essential oil related acute and chronic health issues.
