Bumble bee jasper

https://www.mindat.org/photo-973550.html Actual analysis.

“Trade name for colorful fibrous calcite found at Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia. The material is made of radially grown fibrous calcite with a distinctive yellow, orange, and black banding. The orange and yellow colors are mainly caused by finely dispersed realgar. The black stain is caused by pyrite.

Note: Bumblebee “Jasper” is a misnomer, as this material contains no quartz at all (while actual jasper is a variety of chalcedony, which itself is more or less a “microcrystalline quartz”).”

Realgar: It is orange-red in color, melts at 320 °C, and burns with a bluish flame releasing fumes of arsenic and sulfur. Realgar is soft with a Mohs hardness of 1.5 to 2 and has a specific gravity of 3.5.

Always good info- now I am curious & will be more mindful of the rocks & their make-up /origins! Thank you for tackling this subject

I hate than any kind of jasper is toxic. I don’t have any bumble bee jasper. I love it but I’m glad I don’t have any.

Bumblebee Stone "Jasper" is indeed found in one Volcano in Indonesia. An active volcano, which is why it’s not mined very frequently and why it’s so rare.
It’s mainly the ingestion of the dust and as such more of a problem for the lapidary than the end consumer.
Why would you just randomly add Ultraviolet Radiation to a potential hazard?
There are so many toxic gemstones that people don’t even realize. Here’s a few:
Rose Quartz, Tigers Eye, Malachite, Fluorite …
BTW I would be happy to buy your bumblebee stone pairs off you.

  7. Mindi on July 17, 2023 at 4:04 pm

It’s only toxic if you breath in the dust or handle the unpolished stone

  8. Elizabeth Cramer on July 17, 2023 at 4:04 pm

I knew this! I love it, but I knew it was full of arsenic. The crystal store close to me has a piece I’d really like to have but, I’ve hesitated buying it because of the toxicity of it. I guess I wasn’t aware that people didn’t know that about bumble bee jasper…♥️♥️

Thank you for this informational. Like many things in nature……may look beautiful and may be as toxic as hell to humans. Nothing is so beautiful that we have to risk our lives for it. I so appreciate your ongoing research into this and your passion to get the word out to everyone who can be affected. I will do the same. As someone who is recovering from cancer, I salute you!!!

I was just going to purchase more pendants. The pendant and earrings I foolishly dropped them in my silver cleaner and not shiny anymore. So have I removed the seal? Who do I go to in CA to repolish and seal?

  11. kbplus1 on July 17, 2023 at 4:17 pm

If its not sealed I would not mess with it. I think you could seal it with a thin layer of epoxy but if you have kids or other humans that might stick stuff in there mouth please keep this far away from them…

I am continuing to add websites to the description as I find them. Be sure to check the sites out. One is a analysis of the volcanic material.

Wow I just received two spheres today and was researching, the bag it came in had yellow residue in bag I thought it was paint that’s scary mines are polished supposedly

  14. Moomin Pug on July 17, 2023 at 4:29 pm

Thanks for warning us! I adore it, but knowing this will not buy it because I am sure those mining it and cutting it are getting poisoned, as well the environment around them.

  15. Crystalmania on July 17, 2023 at 4:31 pm

This stuff isn’t going to do you any harm unless you’re ingesting or inhaling the dust from it. Most of these crystals are completely safe to use or even wear as jewelry because the levels of these toxic chemicals/elements are quite insignificant. The danger would come more from if you were drilling/cutting into them or carving them and inhaling the dust, which goes for any rock you’re working with. A lot of minerals contain toxic elements such as lead, copper, mercury, asbestos, antimony etc.

Thank you for the information. I didn’t know that.
