Showdown between a sapphire crystal and a Seiko hardlex crystal. Let's see who's the biggest loser!

Showdown between a sapphire crystal and a Seiko hardlex crystal. Let's see who's the biggest loser!

Which one is better? Sapphire or hardlex!! Personally for me I have started loving hardlex due to the warmness it gives the dial. I do like sapphirecrystals but I dislike a lot of the colored anti-reflective coatings. Sometimes they can give a dial a super cool effect but I really like to enjoy a dial in its regular state.

Either way I hope you like the video. I went super scientific with it. LOL

Thanks for Watching!

That’s not "sandpaper" it’s rough Emery cloth

Hi, great video, it kind of answers my doubt about the hardness of both crystals. Anyway I think it is normal that the hardlex scraches more than sapphire, I had read that hardlex is between sapphire and mineral in hardness, but I guess that hardlex is much cheaper. I’ve had a hardlex watch for about 3 months and looks fine so far, no scratches, but I’ve had a Seiko with sapphire for 13 years and still looks perfect :)…thanks a lot for sharing Mr.

Well, of course the hammer would make an appearance, Terry. It’s not the first time. 🙂 Thanks for doing this vid!

Next time use a dark background instead of white.

    The ending was so perfect.

Don’t drop a hammer on my watch. Got it

Your sand paper what is made of? Garnet? Diamond? Sapphire? Etc….

  10. Cipriotu on January 25, 2022 at 11:05 am

I scratch Certina sapphire with a screwdriver and nothing

  11. BadBack Biker on January 25, 2022 at 11:06 am

Great video…couldn’t see the scratches on account of the camera angle and lighting but narration was clear enough. Thanks for making this and for sharing your experience.

The more expensive Seiko watches are saphire crystal..

    What did that prove? uhhhh

    silence

  14. Sylas Schmidt on January 25, 2022 at 11:18 am

Great video love the ending heheheheh. I’d love to see hardlex vs mineral just to see if there’s any difference at all.

The white background made this video 90% useless. Consider redoing another video using a color background.

  16. AUSSIE on January 25, 2022 at 11:22 am

Note to self. Don’t rub my $700 Seiko on sandpaper.

  17. Tara Smathers on January 25, 2022 at 11:24 am

thank you for this helpful demonstration…..and to every moron in the comments previously that said that this was "emery cloth", and not "sand paper," you clearly have never used either. This is (probably….rough guess) an 80 grit sand paper, sanding disc for an orbital sander. Emery cloth has a "meshy" screen appearance. Those are just people that want to believe soooooo badly that nothing can scratch there sapphire crystal…..SMH

great test, nothing wrong with hardlex

I think your demo said all, that’s a good video, no messing around stright out to business

anybody who has polished out scratches on a hardlex will agree yes it scratches and yes it polishes out for the same reason. Keep them up Bro.

  22. Lee Powers on January 25, 2022 at 11:35 am

Seiko’s explanation of Hardlex being more shock and pressure resistant at deep diving depths, was good enough for me.

Most people complaining aren’t saturation divers.
I’m not either, but I’m also not questioning Seiko in their decision on Hardlex.
I’m actually more bummed that my Tuna MM300 doesn’t have a X or PROSPEX.

  23. Michael Matsonashvili on January 25, 2022 at 11:36 am

I even remember a local watchmaker that told me my Oris Big Crown ProPilot didn’t actually have a sapphire crystal if I managed to scratch it. Sapphire is scratch resistant not proof! Thanks for sharing Terry

  24. Dorset Dumpling on January 25, 2022 at 11:37 am

I’m guessing that that was emery paper, not sandpaper.
Emery is more or less the same stuff as sapphire, and is just as hard. Sand (silica) is much softer.

  25. malamute hamscone on January 25, 2022 at 11:40 am

People think you can only scratch Sapphire with diamond because it’s higher up on the hardness scale, but you can actually scratch something with another object that is of the same hardness.

  26. LordGryllwotth on January 25, 2022 at 11:42 am

You can use 0000 steel wool to remove dirt from your windscreen on your car without any damage.

  27. 87 Seconds Education on January 25, 2022 at 11:46 am

I always assumed damage occured from high impact and not friction from rough surfaces

  28. Carlo Pugliese on January 25, 2022 at 11:46 am

    FIRST!!! 🙂
Actually seventh by the time I clicked 🙂 🙂 🙂

Seiko uses the excuse of Hardlex being shatter proof to not spend the money on Sapphire faces. My 1990’s Oyster Perpetual has been dropped dozens of times on concrete, rocks, and the face is still flawless

  30. Brad Crafton on January 25, 2022 at 11:49 am

Great to have a gauge of how much to worry about scratching my Hardlex equipped seikos. Keep it up Terry
