Thanks for demonstrating this! I don’t go out of my way to abuse any sapphire crystal watches but this test does stop me from worrying about it.

A diver under water can run into strong current and possible for a diver to loose control and hit something sapphire can shatter due to impact hardlex is more durable to impact yes it can be scratch but its more resistant to shatter. Remember a shattered crystal watch is no good under water, Thats why they develop the hardlex from the name it self HARD-LEX but most users are not really a diver so they preferred sapphire for scratch resistant properties. Thats innovation coming from SEIKO watch equip with HARDLEX instead of sapphire.

Got an omega repaired with sapphire crystal 10 minutes after walking out the shop with it accidentally scratched it on a wall and ended up paying another 200 euros for a repair

Only diamond or another Ruby or saphire can scratch Saphire crystal. Steel is way lower on the hardness scale. So it will never scratch saphire crystal. However if enough pressure is used it will shatter the saphire crystal. But it would require an unusual amount of force. So in summary Nails or anything made of steel will never scratch a Saphire crystal.

Guess I will be modding some of my watches to sapphire when their current crystals become scratched. Thank you for this video. Nice job.

So many videos about hardness of 3 types of glasses for watches and talked about hardness only. Why no one knows nor talk about significant weight difference of those.

  28. Abandon on September 29, 2023 at 8:11 pm

  29. Anthony Ho on September 29, 2023 at 8:12 pm

Test hardness of 316 vs 904 Steel against scratches, Superhard Coating by SEIKOs marine master diver, how hard is it ? Different types of Titanium used in watch cases what brand has the lightest, hardest case? Strength of bracelets ie how strong is a well made steel bracelet ie which brands bracelet has strongest links or pins? If the pin attaching the bracelet to the watch is flimsy then its useless how strong the individual links are ! Which watch has the strongest casing ? Only Victorinox has a video on its toughness, Strength! How strong is a Rolex Submariner case ? Probably won’t know unless can find a Submariner whose movement not worth repairing subject it to extreme tests or maybe you can ask Rolex for some information would be easier ?
