Finding Agatized Coral Fossils in Georgia – Gem and Mineral Collecting in the River!

In this video we head up to Southern Georgia for the best of both fossil and gem/mineral hunting in our area! We find the Florida state stone – Agatized Coral!

The mineral chalcedony is a microcrystalline type of quartz which replaces the original calcium carbonate of the coral and forms into agate. Grains of sand and pieces of the original calcium carbonate act as a nucleus for the agate to form radially around a point, which leads to the botryoidal (bumpy, grape-like) mineral. Druzy quartz also forms in this setting.
