    Black smoke is likely just because there’s entirely too much wick left sticking out, and you’re therefore burning the wick itself rather than just the fuel as intended.

    Also, should probably have some sort of bushing to fit inside the hole in the cap to allow the wick to pass through safely without allowing it (or any burning debris) to fall down into the jar.
