Is a white opal more valuable than a crystal opal? I’ve always loved opals and thank you for teaching me more about my birthstone 🙂

What about light and semi crystal? I’ve also heard of white crystal like black crystal or dark crystal o.o to many fine lines! You need body tone scales again :,(

Is this kind of judged by professional experience, or does your country’s gemological standard have advice for appraising the clarity of opal? I’m not sure if they do here in The States, but if they do it probably follows Australian standards pretty close, since that’s the origin of the material. Where I kind of get confused while cutting opal is when a crystal passes into being jelly. Some people expect to be able to see through the stone despite the color play or pattern, but I often run into stones where those attributes obscure the stone’s clarity, but you could read text through it in low light conditions when the stone isn’t flashing so bright. I kind of assume it’s left tot he seller’s discretion, but I could be misinformed (I am not a certified gemologist).

Great vid thanks. I have a 3ct ethiopian crystal opal near water clear. The RI is correct the SG is correct. Yet when placed on the polariscope it does not give the isotropic effect of most opal(even Mex fire) Is there a correct reading for crystal opal? Thanks Sub’d
