Crystalline Chrysocolla Pseudomorph After A Mystery Mineral! #crystals #gems #nature #science
Chrysocolla is a mineral that forms as a secondary reaction as copper decomposes in the ground. Over time water carries copper ions away from the decomposing body and begins to deposit minerals like chrysocolla. Chrysocolla does not typically form in the crystal habit that you see here. This is a pseudomorph, the chrysocolla replaced an already existing mineral. The mineral could have been anhydrite, azurite (another copper mineral), gypsum, or anything else with this crystal habit. Still, very fun!

Again, blue chalk
It’s BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for the lesson!
