Nawi Kichay & Chumpi Away with Mullu Khuyas (Chumpi Stones)

Nawi Kichay & Chumpi Away with Mullu Khuyas (Chumpi Stones)

This ceremony is the basic initiation of the Inca path of the left side as shown to Juan Núñez del Prado from his Q’ero master Don Andres Espinoza.

Literally translated it means “opening the eyes” and “weaving the belts”. It’s a performance to open certain energetic centers of perception that are located in the human body. In the Andean tradition these energetic centers are called “ñawis”.

By weaving the belts these ñawis are being connected in order to create a feeling of inner harmony and integrity. Nawi Kichay & Chumpi Away is not only a powerful initiation but also a ceremony and an exercise of the Andean spiritual tradition.

Often people refer to these stones as “chumpi stones” or “chumpi khuyas”. Even though “chumpi” means belt and with these khuyas a so-called “chumpi paqo” weaves energetic belts these five stones are nevertheless properly called “mullu khuyas”. “Mullu” refers to a rare shell – and in the old days these khuyas were made out of this material. So, even though today they are being made of alabaster the old masters still call them “mullu khuyas”.
