New skin research could help slow signs of ageing | BBC News

Researchers have made a scientific discovery that could be used to slow the signs of ageing.

The Human Cell Atlas project has discovered how the human body creates skin from a stem cell, and even reproduced small amounts of skin in a lab.

As well as combatting ageing, the findings could also be used to produce artificial skin for transplantation and prevent scarring.

*Keep the sun off your face*, drink plenty of fluid, use some sort of lightweight emmolient, it doesn’t even have to be expensive, just to stop skin drying.

Interesting. Unfortunately the report doesn’t give much details about the study.

We have to realize that we are in the dawn of a new age as chemistry and biology and the discoveries of life bring us closer to unlocking the greatest mystery of them all: aging. What has fascinated me for a long time is Professor Jim Tour’s analysis of the simple cell. A cell has Lipids, which form the membranes of the cell, inner and outer. It has 19 Amino acids and 1 other form of acid, it has carbohydrates (sugars), it has nucleic acids (RNA & DNA). Professor Tour said that since 1952 when serious study began about the cell, very little progress has been made. The outer membrane has 10 to the 78 billion possibilities and only one combination will work. This is 10 with 78 billion zeroes after it! If only one combination will work, then how in the world did that just happen in a prebiotic pond eons ago? The carbohydrates on the outer membrane are more complex than the RNA & DNA combined. When a product is needed from one part of the cell to another, it builds a monorail system and sends the product to the other part of the cell and then the monorail dissolves. Boys and girls, the simplest cell is so complex that after more than 50 years, they still cannot understand how it works. Professor Tour said, even if they gave someone the lipids, amino acids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates and put them in the right order, it still would not work because no one knows how the cell becomes ‘alive. I am paraphrasing and excuse me Jim, if I have got one or two things wrong. To recap: we are on the cusp of keeping us young forever; this will mean a change in the human community beyond anything anyone can imagine. What keeps me up at night is wondering what is the spark that suddenly makes innate material come alive? How could a cell have become alive?

It might be used for burn victims. So interesting they can identify which genes are doing what. I like the fairy lights.
For real anti aging, they would also need to rejuvenate bone, collagen and fat, but its a start.

Because all you races are in competition with the Mother of all creation, embrace your wrinkles and stop with the obsession with anti wrinkle. , Botox etc

  11. @mugenjin205 on February 16, 2025 at 6:49 pm

Great I love these medical breakthroughs, I doubt we will see anything come of it though every year we hear about some medical breakthrough to never hear about it again just like that scientist who reversed aging in a mouse and the mouse was able to see better but then never heard anything again.

There’s a clock of sorts in the genes that ticks away as we age. It signals when changes such as wrinkles are to occur as well as deterioration of critical body parts.

  16. @Franky2A3 on February 16, 2025 at 6:54 pm

Getting rid of wrinkles is not anti-ageing. What’s happening inside of the body.

  21. @tracnemaker123 on February 16, 2025 at 7:01 pm

To defy aging, one needs to add simulated artificial content related to longetivity?

  22. @daniellezz2 on February 16, 2025 at 7:01 pm

Yeah, just like all the "new treatments" for baldness. This thing won’t do a thing, I guarantee it. If you care about aging, Sun screen is 1#. Besides that, It’s possible to delay aging and reverse a LOT just through Microneedling. No procedure that I have done in my life was as helpful as the high-quality derma pen I got for around 100$

  27. @lehxyx on February 16, 2025 at 7:05 pm

We first need to address how a bioengineered stem cell is being created, because we aren’t going to be able to ethically extract stem cells from people and supply them in products. Then, we need to test the bioengineered stem cell for skin care efficacy, and *then* you can send word out that you’ve made a discovery.

secondopinionfromai AI fixes this. Skin research may slow ageing.

  29. @Angie-in8wc on February 16, 2025 at 7:07 pm

The wealthy will look fabulous at 120 and the rest of us will be dead at 50 due to low grade food and the inability to afford health care. It’s a dystopian future.

  40. @HIT40PLUS on February 16, 2025 at 7:25 pm

Exercise is the most evidence based anti aging and disease prevention strategy. So why is this not prescribed before drugs by the health care industry? Because it is not profitable and requires effort and discomfort in an ever growing comfort orientated society.
