Astrology: Fact or Fiction?

Astrology: Fact or Fiction?

A significant percentage of the population believes in astrology. This is the notion that the positions of the stars and planets in the sky at the moment of your birth have an influence on your characteristics, and that their positions over time influence daily events. Can this be possible? By what mechanism does this influence propagate? If it’s true, why haven’t we encountered anything like this in our study of astronomy? Shouldn’t we be able to do experiments to test its validity? We sure can. Let’s take a real good look at what astrology proposes, and see if we can to the bottom of whether there is any truth to it or not.

ahh , profesor Dave , you and your forces. Why everything has to be described that way , let us believe in magic. It’s incredible how much people have achieved given how stupid we are

I told someone I know who believes in astrology that they were stupid and couldn’t understand basic physics. They then said to me that I was being offensive and egotistical !

  5. @stage515 on March 18, 2024 at 5:35 pm

These videos are kinda theraputic in a way; there’s something about breaking down silly ideas with actual science that’s just so entertaining. Very good video, i’m enjoying it so far.

  6. @Slightlyaggravatedcat on March 18, 2024 at 5:35 pm

Did you know if every other planet in the universe other than the earth disappeared literally nothing would happen.

Thank you for making this video! The years off my life that I have lost because of this malignant pseudoscience is preposterous!

    Cancer? I’m Ophiuchian

  10. @cantopig9639 on March 18, 2024 at 5:37 pm

So I would consider myself someone who accepts strictly the birth signs

"if someone is born on some date, they are assigned a birth sign"
I accept this aspect of astrology as just a metaphor, as just some fun little quirk

It only becomes pseudoscience once it is taken literally

  11. @IneaFaedyn on March 18, 2024 at 5:39 pm

I expected this video to just be "Its fiction. Obviously." and then credits

  12. @hdmaragh on March 18, 2024 at 5:41 pm

I definitely don’t believe in astrology, but what about what they might coincide with. Like being born in the same region around the same time in the same generation and space in a family could coincide with a few thing. like how 10 months is a very long time for development as a child, but you have the January born of the same year in the class with the december born. The January born have almost a whole year of social, physical, and emotional development so they are sometimes seen as the class smart ones, and then the ones around November at the young age get frustrated because they feel a little behind so they get labeled as "impulsive" (and thus ScOrPiO eNeRgY). . . and then the February and march born ones become athletic types because of relatively increase in physical size. . . and the social ones in september since their birthdays coincide with the happy beginning of the school year where everyone gets along and thus the bday parties.

btw all of this is made up just to say categorical generalizations are just far too easy to create

  15. @XcooldereX on March 18, 2024 at 5:42 pm

There is definitely something. I can’t say is it fact or fiction, I can’t even say what is more important when it comes to astrology. But I saw too much caricature-like stereotypical representatives of their signs, who corresponded to them to such detail that I can’t unsee it anymore.

  17. @michaeldorathy3295 on March 18, 2024 at 5:49 pm

The form of Astrology he is talking about is not true. Horoscopes are just silly nonsense. However, what is the foundation of Astrology? It’s similar to a calendar. It’s the constellation you see right before the sun rises. If you are looking at Leo and the sun rises up from that position, ur under the sign of Leo.

  18. @ishathakor on March 18, 2024 at 5:51 pm

my favourite thing is when my family who goes to an astrologer went and my aunt was pregnant and he predicted the child will be a boy. said child is a girl. 50/50 bet that he lost. same guy predicted i would be married by 24. i am 25 and single. he also said if i wear a bracelet of some precious stone i will pass my exams, so now my mom thinks i passed high school because i wore a bracelet and not because i spent 5 months studying for finals.

  19. @groinBlaster31 on March 18, 2024 at 5:52 pm

Honestly the only kind of consistent way in which one’s birth date potentially affects personality has to do with how old or young you are among your cohort in school. So, the oldest 1st graders might have consistently stronger leadership skills, or something, than the youngest. Also more confidence, maybe, as they have more advanced brain development while undergoing the same intellectual challenges than their younger peers. No idea if this correlates at all with signs. But its something ACTUALLY rooted in reality theoretically.

The only Astrology sign I know is cancer, because every bald guy has it

  21. @paularitacosta on March 18, 2024 at 5:56 pm

Sorry, but science is still trying to unify the 4 forces… how can you claim that?

  22. @pi4313 on March 18, 2024 at 5:57 pm

Ok now apply this to religion

  23. @paularitacosta on March 18, 2024 at 5:57 pm

wtf – "gravity is the result of distortions in space-time created by mass and energy" not the attraction

Where is your 100 person data from?

  25. @hiphopblender1291 on March 18, 2024 at 6:02 pm

This guy just told us to "trust the science bro!" He FALSELY claimed that people of old were superstitious, for believing dots in the sky affected life on earth. He ignored their ability to construct buildings that aligned with those dots in the sky that todays super scientists are clueless of how they did it. Let alone that USA’s founding fathers (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson & many more) were full blown astrologers.

  26. @miaomiaochan on March 18, 2024 at 6:04 pm

The only cancer you are is a cancer upon science illiteracy and willful ignorance.

Which is, sadly, a common affliction among my astrology-believing coworkers.

professor dave amazing video how many likes on this comment for you to sell your fingernail clippings

  28. @mycelxoe on March 18, 2024 at 6:06 pm

although everything he says is true, astrology is a kind of a religion, probably not true but people still choose to believe in it, and calling people who choose to believe in it shouldn’t be called dumb just like any other religious and spiritual person.
as long as they acknowledge that its not a science nor fact i dont see the problem.
(i dont believe in astrology myself before you hate me)

  29. @Tacom4ster on March 18, 2024 at 6:08 pm

You give me another reason to hate the Regan administration, cool essay

  30. @tropezando on March 18, 2024 at 6:08 pm

My only interest and knowledge in astrology comes from playing way too much Final Fantasy Tactics. Because of that, I only know about compatibility of signs besides my own, because all the good characters were not compatible with my sign of Sagittarius lol.

Even though I don’t care for astrology, I still find constellations pretty. Apparently, I was born in the little sliver of time that supposedly aligns with the Ophiuchus/Asclepius constellation, so that’s kinda neat. I can’t see anything but the dippers, Casseiopeia, and Orion from where I live though. If I go about two hours north during the right time of year, I miiiight be able to see the aurora borealis.

  31. @AzaleaJane on March 18, 2024 at 6:08 pm

Know what I really despise? Astrology being presented as some kind of feminist thing. To me there is nothing feminist about putting people into preconceived boxes based on dry facts about their birth. That’s kind of the whole point of every social justice movement: judge a person for their actual deeds and values, not your preconceptions about whatever category you’ve sorted them into.

It’s just another kind of phrenology.

  32. @danigamer3274 on March 18, 2024 at 6:08 pm

It’s tha damn outro that does it for me. Inspiring as hell

  33. @olegoleg1838 on March 18, 2024 at 6:09 pm

My man, but why are you so fucking sure these forces and informational channels are the only ones that exist? 200 years ago no one knew about those and now you think you know it all? This is where scientists get stupid, you cannot know everything – a lot is yet to be uncovered!! All those electromagnetic stuff is but the simplest rudimentary physics, we still don’t know the underlying matter of ideas, information, will etc. you never know how all those stars could really affect us or be entangled with us

  34. @mikitea68 on March 18, 2024 at 6:09 pm

Astrology is spicey psychology. There are so many types and cultures associated with it, but when I used it I knew it wasn’t fact but a way to look at aspects of character traits I may have. I’m a pisces and the original myth was about Aphrodite and her son turning into fish in order to hide from a terrible threat. I don’t want kids so I can’t relate too much to the story, but I can appreciate the myths for what they are. My Chinese zodiac is a snake. Because of that as a kid I developed a love for snakes. I see it as harmless as long as people recognize that it’s not the be all of your personality, but that’s the problem as many people do.

  35. @user-yl8zp9mn1w on March 18, 2024 at 6:11 pm

People actually believe in astrology? I thought this was a joke

  36. @fredkelly6953 on March 18, 2024 at 6:12 pm

Yeah you gotta take it with a pinch of salt as it does sound far-fetched but I couldn’t see myself as any other star sign. Personality wise I’m an Aquarian through.

  37. @kevinhardy8997 on March 18, 2024 at 6:12 pm

I mean, if you just think about it… how would the suns angle affect your personality, like how? Radiation??? Gene editing? No

  38. @joshfreedman3558 on March 18, 2024 at 6:16 pm

The real question is why do so many more women believe in it than men?

  39. @Anonymouthful on March 18, 2024 at 6:18 pm

Astrology is very important for without it we woulnt have Homestuck.

  40. @mrsherwood2599 on March 18, 2024 at 6:20 pm

Astrology totally works- it perfectly predicts stupidity.

  41. @CarlytheQueenofChaos on March 18, 2024 at 6:21 pm

Okay according to astrology I am born as Scorpio and my dad and grandmas are born as Sagittarius.

My mom’s mom born on November 28th is extremely fitting to the Sagittarius stereotype given by astrology, my other grandma’s isn’t.(she has extreme Capricorn energy lol)
My other grandma is born a literal day later in the same place as my grandma.
My mom’s mom’s mom in fact gave milk to both babies, because my great grandma from dad’s side wasn’t able to properly produce milk.
They should be the exact same person, but in reality they are completely different.

Then there is my dad born November 25th, but behaving the most Scorpio ever, just like my Scorpio ass does and the exact horoscope for my very birthday minute is actually EXTREMELY accurate.
Bro literally made random shit up and happened to randomly describe me as the most Scorpio Scorpio in history.

Here is the Thing:When astrology was made up thousands of years ago by many ancient cultures at the same time, such as the mesopotamians and Mayas, the stars were aligned differently and there is not only one new star sign in the ecliptic, The times the sun travels through the starsigns in the ecliptic have changed.

I am actually not a Scorpio, I was born in the current time frame for being a Libra.
The time frames are also not similar at all, because the shortest one is actually scorpio with only nine days.
Guess what nine days that are, correct, the nine days from 21st to 29th of November.
Means my grandmas and dad are actually scorpio and unlike my dad the last two people that the typical Scorpio horoscopes would fit into are both of my grandmas.

That’s literally enough proof for me that this is bs, because it’s the real life example of this not being true at all.
Although my brother being a Capricorn has almost as much Capricorn energy as my grandma and my sister being Aries has the most Aries energy ever.

I was into astrology way too much for now completely not believing in it at all bro.
Same goes for healing powers of crystals☠️

  42. @heretustay on March 18, 2024 at 6:23 pm

as a leftist and feminist who believes science is a key pillar to equality and freedom for all people—and having to deal with SO MANY of my comrades who deeply believe in this shit—this video gave me a sense of catharsis that nearly brought me to tears.

mysticism and religion is so dumbfoundingly strong right now across all political alignments, its just scary. we will never find the answers for worldwide peace and happiness until we leave these ancient, dogmatic, and harmful ways of thinking behind.

  43. @timothybrown5999 on March 18, 2024 at 6:23 pm

I’m guessing most believers in astrology have never known someone born on the same day as them. Makes the differences between us easier to spot.

I once worked at a newspaper in the editing room and the employee who was assembling the newspaper told me that if the horoscopes didn’t arrive by the deadline that they would just make up the horoscope for that day.
