Too Emotionally Exhausted to Make Decluttering Decisions?

Too Emotionally Exhausted to Make Decluttering Decisions?

There are SO many decisions to make on a daily basis these days, so the thought of making decluttering decisions is overwhelming. It feels easier to just leave the clutter than to deal with it. A lot of us just don’t have any emotional energy left to deal with anything that doesn’t absolutely have to be done. BUT, good news! The first three steps of my decluttering process are decision-free! You can make decluttering progress (not finish) without making any decisions or expending any emotional energy.

I love your channel! Finally a YouTuber who actually has real life decluttering and organization methods. Doing a little is better than nothing, and it’s nice to hear everything doesn’t have to be perfect. ❤️

I like that you have a dirty pan on the stove. It helps us know that things don’t have to be perfect to start decluttering

I feel we could be distress!!! I can totally relate to you and the way you think. I needed this.

Okay, one of your steps is "take it where it goes immediately" but what if the place that thing goes needs to be decluttered? Do I then declutter that to make space? What if I ind something in that second area that goes somewhere else that’s also cluttered and full? Questions from a lifelong slob.

I put this video on loop so it can keep playing while I sort through my Moms recipes. It is about the hardest things I have to go through since she passed away. Emotional is the key word. This is helping me to really start on this. Thank you Dana from the bottom of my heart!

The beauty of this Youtube presentation is the bringing to light of the underlying issues that impact decluttering and organizing. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dana.

You are the FIRST person that has ever taught a way of decluttering that WORKS for me!!!! Thank you, Dana. I devoured both your books, and I use your videos to stay in the right mindset.

Oh my gosh you were reading my mind. Yes, I thought once I retired my house would be company ready all the time. I have made progress and then…..it stopped.

  14. Donna Hubler on July 4, 2023 at 7:44 am

I just found you! You’re such an awesome lady! That “thinger” you said you didn’t know what it is is the sheath to a cooking thermometer, it has a clip on it so you can clip it to your apron bib while cooking/bbq-ing. My drawer looked like yours until my drawer broke and had them all rebuilt. One of the tricks I use is to rearrange the furniture then you’re forced to deep clean/purge. And also invite people over… got to clean the house. Lol. Hugs! You’re awesome!

thank you Dana, I think this has made the penny drop that even the smallest about of progress – removing rubbish from one place is progress. I get so embroiled in needing to be perfect, I become paralysed with overwhelm. Just listening to this make me realise that even the smallest of steps can make a difference. Many blessings x

Might be useful to seek counseling or therapy FIRST and then worry about clutter, seems to me. Because IMHO, if you’re good with the basics, decisions about your stuff will not be mountainous.

Mostly my house is not a mess. But my 2 cleaning closets and the grandchildren toy closet and chest get super disorganized. Tidying them each takes an hour of hard thinking, thinning and putting away. Then I downsize possessions in the house and end up with multiple bags to go various places-returns and gifts to friends and family, donations, things related to volunteer work. In the process of decluttering I end up with pile- by the back door, on the coffee and dining room tables. It takes at least an hour to put this away.
I am becoming more aware of what not to bring into the house. Any tips for making the process of decluttering easier and less demanding? Thanks.

Thanks for the video! I almost wrote a comment asking for tips on what to do when you’re physically exhausted (I’ve been sick for the last 3-4 days, it’s not fun) and then I realised I already knew the answer. Do your dishes, do a 5 minutes pick-up xD

  24. Barbara Bayer on July 4, 2023 at 8:00 am

This is such an amazing technique. Getting started has always been "impossible," but not anymore. Then I start seeing other things I can do…or not….the thing is I’ve already made it better. The looking for trash is really the real treasure in disguise! I wonder if I could employ this in other areas of my life…such as..er…men! LOL

What is the thing that looks like a magnifying glass on the stovetop?

  26. Becki Smith on July 4, 2023 at 8:04 am

Appreciating this approach, once again. I am decluttering and cleaning and organizing spots here and there in my apartment right now! Very pleased with my defrosted and clean refrigerator, the majority of my Christmas decorations are ready to be taken upstairs to the attic… my scarves & shawls are going to get a new home. They are on my bed right now, which doesn’t exactly fit with your policy of only better, but they were in two drawers that just were not made for scarves, and I do have space in my wardrobe. So I’m going to find a box that fits and organize them in a way that’s easier to access and see and it’s nicer for the scarves!

8:30 I think a thermometer cover? You didn’t need it

  33. Dana Rzechula on July 4, 2023 at 8:14 am

I got an empanada crimper in a fit of ambition. Thing stayed in my drawer for 4 years before I could gather strength to admit to myself I was not going to make empanadas any time in the near future. Still. You gotta have dreams 😉

Can you do a skincare routineeeeeee? Also thank you so much for doing these type of videos. And I’ve been ordering replica’s since 2017 xrepbag.com mixing them in with my authentic items for years. Keep doing what you’re doing. I’m a new follower!!!

  36. S CT on July 4, 2023 at 8:19 am

Oh my goodness, you need an organizer/cardboard box for that kitchen drawer, or a coffee can for the spoons/spatulas at least. I want to run over and do that so much.

  37. Julie Q. on July 4, 2023 at 8:20 am

Hi, I’m a French fan of your podcast (have been for years) ! I now discover your videos, and I must say that this one helped me yesterday to look for trash and easy stuff. Generally your decluttering questions help me, but my biggest problem is : defining a home for an object. I moved in a new apartment a few months ago, and I still have several unboxed boxes, because I can’t decide where to store (must I add that I am a perfectionist? 😉 ). Do you have podcasts or videos on that subject? I know it’s not exactly decluttering, but it is my clutter issue, because I just leave things until I can decide where to store them…

  38. Madonna Hagedorn on July 4, 2023 at 8:21 am

I’ll say for the most part I try to be organized. But, I have gone through the phase you are describing. Everything overwhelmed me and I could not get motivated. The thing is, you can see all the things that need doing and that compounds your stress. So, starting slow is still a start, progress is progress.

I have been getting rid of things but I have 20 yrs to declutter. I have such a long way to go! Thank you for your inspiration. I find it easier to take everything out of the drawer then put it back. I can let items go and sometimes find doubles.
