As a family medicine doctor I see patients for fitness-related care all the time. I decided to put together a list of some of the most common mistakes and pitfalls my patients deal with as they begin their fitness journeys. Today we talk about all sorts of stuff, such as the impact of your diet, the myth of spot reduction, gym fails, supplement use such as protein, creatine and pre-workouts, aggressive personal trainers, the truth about stretching, the importance of weight lifting, and the incredible value of recovery. Let me know how your fitness journey is going down in the comments!

I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Daddy noel says dynamic stretching is better for before a workout than static stretching. Dynamic is movement-based and static is just holding a position. Is that true?

In middle school I was doing a sort of test to see if my muscles improved by trying to in crease the weight on the bar and I put too much weight and leaned forward and it rolled onto my neck and over my head, I now have a crooked neck. I near to go to a chiropractor because it has ruined my neck for so long but I’ve never had time to go.

I hate that I wasted 3-5 years following bad training routines. I don’t feel like putting more time into it, but i still do, but I’m less motivated from time to time

Hi doctor Mike. Exercising for 1h30 min or 1 hour at least like abs and Cardio is too much? this can affect my muscles growth in recovery days?

Being a B.S kinesiology major and now an RN BSN, I encourage physical activity for my patients. EXCERISE IS MEDICINE! Depending on the acuity of the patient and there mobility I love to teach them about exercise. The hardest part about explaining the benefits of exercise and mobility is explaining the ways that the person or the patient can learn to enjoy it. So many people have personal trainers to help them lose weight but are these exercises really going to have them adhere to an exercise regimen in the long term? Sadly no, which is why we need to educate and encourage a personalized regimen for everybody so that they aren’t exercising for the sake of losing weight, but so they can feel better and enjoy feeling better.

  20. DagDaWildDog on November 14, 2021 at 10:25 am

the thing that drives me nuts is that you are supposed to do weights slowly and be in control of the weights at all time not slamming it down on the ground or letting it drop. This is just as much for the person’s safety as everyone else’s not to mention respecting the equipment (weights will crack).

  21. Lily Frey on November 14, 2021 at 10:25 am

So here’s a question… when I really hit my abs with frequency, I DO get really toned abs, but when I don’t they get soft, even if I’m not eating differently or working out less in general. What’s the deal, if spot reduction doesn’t work, why does it… somehow work?

Is it different using body weight instead of weights as strength training?

  25. Eric Best on November 14, 2021 at 10:33 am

Mike, eat a handful of fresh or dried cherries immediately after your workouts; cuts the delayed onset muscle soreness in half.

  26. Jesse on November 14, 2021 at 10:35 am

    In regards to "too hard too soon";
Obviously I’m not gonna argue with this point. Obviously you shouldn’t work yourself too hard to the point of being sick.

But at the same time, and I do understand it depends on the circumstances, ‘getting tired’ isn’t bad. For example; a while ago I hadn’t been working out quite as much, I was still working out, just not the same amount due to being away from home nearly all of summer.
So shortly after I got back home, on my workout day, I decided to do one of the premade workouts routines I do from time to time. At the end of that routine; I was panting, I was sweating up a river, but as I laid down catching my breath, in between those breaths I let out small laughter’s through smiling lips. Because it just felt great to have pushed myself again, and if that’s a motivator for people that’s great, as long as it doesn’t go too far.

A great way to look at it, I feel, is:
Work out, don’t work yourself out

I been working out for years. I’m a little bigger than before not much but my goal isn’t to get big. My goal is to get better and I want to run a marathon one day. When I started out I couldn’t run a mile now I run 10. I do strength training but to get stronger not bigger cause I love running and weights help me. I’m getting a vasectomy soon and won’t be able to do much til I recover and that sucks. I had to take a couple weeks off when I got tattoos so it would heal and look good so I can do it again for this.
