Mount Chumar Bakar is part of the Karakoram range in northern Pakistan : the roof of the world. It rises in a region which is particularly harsh, culminating at a height of 5,600 meters.
There, in a mine inaccessible to vehicles, where oxygen is lacking and it is bitterly cold, the fascinating deep blue aquamarine crystals form.
For six months of the year, shepherds turned miners extract the enormous crystals in an artisanal fashion at this vertiginous height. They seek the protection of a shaman against the wrath of the fairies who haunt these mountains.
This film will lead you into an exceptional human adventure where cold, sickness, conflicts resolved by popular tribunals, the thrill of discovery, and local beliefs are the everyday life of these miners.
You can follow from day to day the life of Murtaza, a man who does not hesitate to travel long distances to sell his findings. His journey ends in Peshawar, a city near Afghanistan where all business transactions are possible.
In the shop of a merchant in this town you will discover his treasures and many others too.
From this remote region of Pakistan the most beautiful aquamarines are taken to be cut and mounted on precious jewelry like that of Lorenz Baümer of Place Vendôme in Paris.
