What is Sugilite? What is it Worth?

Sugilite is truly a special gemstone. It has a vibrant purple color unlike any other mineral in the world. This video covers what sugilite is, and what it is worth. This video also covers the difference between sugilite and sugilite gel. I have worked with sugilite on several occasions. This video was made by a geologist who is based in Arizona.

Beautiful. Do you have an online shop for your jewelry? Do you believe in the healing properties of stones?

Interesting video. I wasn’t aware of the gem form. Thanks for that info. I’ve only heard it pronounced with a hard "g" as in gem. In CA’s White Mt range, we found a small deposit of a rock that was first thought to be sugilite, but it was a fluorite/mica mix in a gorgeous medium lilac purple with green veining. I’m quite a fan of purple, but sugilite always looks to me like that dyed so-called "mojave turquoise" that I think comes out of the kingman gem company. Ick. You pegged the dyed look.

Beautiful gem stone! Didn’t know about it! Reminds me of Lapis from Afghanistan. Although it is blue.

In my opinion, sugilite is a very underrated gemstone. Most people are not aware of it. It is just too beautiful of a stone to ignore. What are your thoughts on this gemstone?

Lithium ion is colorless. The color is due to trivalent manganese. A mineral with similar color and structure is charoite.

I love sugilite! However, I believe you are mistaken as to the cause of its purple color. There are, as you say, many colors of sugilite, but only the manganoan sugilite from Wessels mine and a few other places is purple. Wessels is a manganese mine in the Kalahari mine fields, thus the sugilite there was infused with manganese. Allow me to quote GIA:

"In 1979, a new gem material with a strilzing purple color began appearing on the gem market (figure 1). Its source s the Wessels mine in the northern part of Cape Prov- ince, Republic of South Africa. Initially there was some question as to the identity of this material, and in the gemological literature it was first referred to as sogdianite (Dusmatov et al., 1968; Forbes et al., 1972; Bank et al., 1978; Dillman, 1978). Subsequently, Dunn et al. (1980) showed that this new gem material is actually a *compositional variety of the uncommon mineral sugilite* (which is closely related to sogdianite) that contains minor amounts of manganese. *The manganese is responsible for the distinctive purple color."* – GIA – The Occurrence and Gemological Properties of Wessels Mine Sugilite
