"I expect to see this in…Gen 9", seems like you got your wish. With the introduction of Terrastilize pokemon, you very well could have an Onix with its Terrastilized form as Ice. So head canon, this island somehow grew crystals that are native to Paldea, and this Terrastilized Onix has made this island its home.

I remember back in elementary school this episode kicked off a huge debate between me and my friends over whether or not the onix cards we had were crystal or not as some looked more bluish then others lol good times

I get the feeling the screen play for the first few episodes was written before they decided they wanted Brock gone especially since Tracy occasionally breaks character and draws women
If the Crystal Onix is made of glass, it would probably still be rock or ground type cause that’s what glass is, but if you think about the name having "Crystal" that would imply it is still rock type. Since both the crystal and glass part implies rock, I’m gonna guess Rock/Ice and maybe the reason it took longer to hurt it because it has really high HP or even special defence, though that doesn’t explain why flamethrower or fire spin did so much. I am just spitballing here and haven’t watched Toby’s videos yet, so I could be far off.

its not like ice type lol its still rock just a different type of rock type one thats resistant to water type moves !!!!!!
Maybe the cold blue Crystal Onix should be an Ice-Type, and evolve into a Ice/Steel-Type Glacial Steelix that is white, with thin blue shiny streaks.

Came back to this video just to say that Pokémon did remember the Crystal Onix, because now we have the Terastral gimmick where a Pokémon gains a new type and its body shines like crystal.
And I’m convinced this clearly Ice type crystal Onix inspired that gimmick.

I more than 100% agree with what had to be addressed– like imagine if Brock had been there to see the crystal onix. And I didn’t know it was FOUR episodes ago that he stepped out the show (haven’t seen all the episodes when I was a kid)

Looking at it now, i would imagine this is some kind of regional variant that got lost like the alolan vulpix that got lost in alabastar icelands. Maybe its from a region further up north or futher down south, since ice is as hard as rocks there.
