Awesome timing, I just inherited a friend’s rock collection and have NO CLUE where to start with analyzing it. Thankfully half of them have handwritten labels describing where they were found.
The collection belonged to her parents, who traveled all over the world in the 50s-70s and saved rocks, seashells, stamps, coins, and postcards from all their travels.
My friend is downsizing and doesn’t know what to do with all their "treasures"– to her, it’s just clutter. But she’d rather give their collections to me than throw them in the trash, and I’m happy to take them off her hands!

Just remember for every dollar you have in fossils it’s almost guaranteed to go up 5% to 10% value every year you hold that item. With the inflation coming some of you are a lot better holding on to your collections, it will retain the value of your wealth better than gold! Do not make this your only investment but once you have a healthy savings and investing strategy, fossils are like money hacks

Well, well, well: used to have more but as I aged weight got weightier and many geodes I had got gifted. My mother collected rocks back in the ’60’s, ’70’s and I did too. May become an income supplement later. Time will tell. Fire opals were hugely popular back then but few of us had the $$$$ to afford the gorgeous pieces. Many came from Oz. Thanks again for (re)introducing another angle generating supplemental income AP Man.

Oh my God I have hundreds of these from my Godmother that I have helped her move multiple times over the years now they are sitting in a storage unit. The first image I have dealt with these since I was a teenager and always complain with my brother ever time we had to move them!

There is a guy at my flea market who makes $150,000 a year selling rocks!! He usually sells at large conventions and to museums. But COVID has him selling at smaller venues like craft shows and flea markets. He’s makes $1800 a weekend doing it. Pun intended, this man is a Rock Star!!

You have to be careful of the amethyst. Sometimes they are dyed. I had a nice one that turned white after being in the sun.

  23. SnortChuckleGaspLaugh on August 14, 2022 at 9:27 pm

Do you do appraisals at all? I have found lots of what what I’m hoping is blue chalcedony. Very curious to know if it is worth trying to sell on ebay.

Started following Rock Stars back in my single days. They were all flint knappers, and one of the best knapins is in OH. One of my friends quoted a whole bunch of reasons why crystals are a pain in the wazoo…finally had to write ‘em down. I cherish it to this day. Rock lovers start our collections as kids. Thanks Prof!!

  27. Girl Hustle on August 14, 2022 at 9:31 pm

Good stuff! Love the scientific stuff about them! Just beautiful.

  28. Janine de Villiers on August 14, 2022 at 9:36 pm

Thank you. I love crystals. A wonderful place to visit if anyone ever goes to Namibia is the crystal museum in Swakopmund. The giant crystals generate incredible energy. Their atomic structure each vibrate at a certain frequency and are powerful for healing. Even computers cannot work without a quartz crystal. So underestimated and very special.

    The Auction Professor,
Do you think there’s any money to be made (as a side hobby) buying and flipping gemstones at online auctions? I’m new to gemstones but I think it’d make a cool hobby by collecting gemstones and getting into the gem market.

  35. Inspired By Ebony Love on August 14, 2022 at 9:49 pm

Hello! Whoever lived in this house before me left a collection of stones in the backyard. Big hunks- White ones, jet black ones, reddish brown ones. I don’t know what to do with them or who to take them to. I’m told that she used to go hunting for them and make things from them. How do I identify what they are and what to do with them?

  36. RC MINDSET on August 14, 2022 at 9:51 pm

It’s 4am and I couldn’t sleep clicked this thinking about all those rocks that I moved. Tomorrow morning I’m calling her and sending her this message of the video. I’m just on the edge of my seat.

  37. Tridium Master on August 14, 2022 at 9:52 pm

Citrine is the yellow version of quartz it is quite rare and in its natural state is a light yellow to Golden in color. The citrine in these geodes is most likely heat treated amethyst. You can tell by the color when its that gold and vibrant with dark brown or bronze spots that it has been heat treated to turn yellow.
