Leo in Astrology: Meaning and Traits

Leo in Astrology: Meaning and Traits

Astrologers astrologers Jo O’Neill, Nick Dagan Best, and Chris Brennan do a deep dive into the meaning of the zodiac sign Leo in astrology, and discuss some of the traits and characteristics associated with people who are born with that sign prominent in their birth chart.

Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac, and it is a masculine or diurnal sign, cardinal, watery, and ruled by the Sun.

This is the fifth entry in a series of episodes where we do a deep dive into each of the signs of the zodiac, one per episode, in order to develop a detailed understanding of their core meaning and significations.

Jo and Nick’s credentials for this episode are that they both have stelliums in Leo, which include both the Sun and Ascendant in that sign.

During the course of the episode we talk about different keywords and archetypes associated with Leo, and also look at some birth charts of celebrities who were born with different planets in that sign.

What about our hair? Also , Leo’s see beauty in the world in a way that many miss. With their child like approach they see the essence of a person, place or thing and focus on the potential that many may not see in themselves. Leo’s are about potential and recognition of beauty in the world.

“Leo’s the greatest sign”… what a very Leo thing to say

LOVED this episode, really helped me in my understanding of my Leo spouse and mother.

I’m a Gemini Sun and can definitely attest to the element of play being important for both signs… my husband Nicholas and I don’t have a ton in common but we both love to play video games, board games, and tabletop games. Meanwhile, I learned my love of gaming from my Leo mom.

When my partner was young, he known in school as "secret agent man" because he used to walk around in a blazer and sunglasses and I never thought about it til this episode but that velvet-crushed blazer had a purple lining on the inside! Talk about acting like royalty. I feel like crushed velvet is a Leo thing, too, because my mother also loves it.

And there is no one I’ve ever known who has a more fixed sense of selfhood than my husband; as a super-flexible 0 degree Gemini Sun, I’ve always found it both perplexing and attractive. When he makes up his mind about something, I know there’s no changing his mind.

Maybe my favorite moment in this whole episode though was the spot-on assessment of Scorpio: "as long as I have control, I’ll be okay". Especially how it’s a defense mechanism. My jaw dropped lol. Meanwhile, my partner is thrust into leadership positions without trying. As someone with immense love for Leos, this has been one of my favorites of the series. Can you tell by my gushing? lol. Jo and Nick are great, always happy to see either of them on but what a delight to have both in one. Love, a Scorpio Rising.

I am 5th house Leo sun (19 degrees) conjunct Saturn (20 degrees) been struggling to understand this placement a lot. I never wanted kids and I need everything to be fun and it rarely is lol
I do look very young for my age though and always did

This episode was great and informative but also a little grating for me… Leo is my 12th house and the energy can be so overbearing/whelming… definitely working through the triggers. Looking forward to Virgo!

I’m a Pisces Sun with a Leo Moon and Chris’s explanation of a savior complex felt like a person attack haha

I am Leo rising with the Sun in Capricorn, and I have to admit, Leo traits are so much seen through me. Knowing the rationale behind the rising sign, I identify with it the most. I was born during the eclipse, and my both Sun and Moon are opposite each other, conjunct the nodes in 6th and 12th house, that’s why the Ascendant comes dominant to me.

  12. Noelani on August 11, 2022 at 7:23 pm

"Nick Dagan Best Astrologer" LOL is that is actual last name? Such a fun episode, thank you all! I think we forgot a keyword for Leo: hilarious!

  13. Blair Mitchell on August 11, 2022 at 7:24 pm

I have Sun, Venus, and MC in Leo (10H). My Mom’s a Leo Sun (1H), Ascendant, and Mercury (12H).

She’s much more leo-nine than I: confident, regal, magnetic/charismatic, etc. I barely notice my Leo placements with the 9H Cancer stellium (moon, mercury, mars, n node) in my chart.

Funnily enough, my Mom has a water moon too (Capricorn—5H) but that seems to amplify her Leo fire instead of dampening it. Maybe because the 5th house is ruled by Leo?

Can’t wait to listen to the podcast on our road trip together!

Leo wants control: fire lord Ozai
    Scorpio wants control: Princess Azula.
(From avatar the last air bender)
Azula was obsessed with control and went insane when she was betrayed by those she trusted (control/loyalty).

Are the guests coordinating their clothes or is it just a coincidence? Red/brown for Leo, blue for cancer lol

  16. WeFree Thinkers on August 11, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Rising, Sun, Moon, Mercury all Leo 12th house. Would like to hear how the 12th house may change or affect the typical energy of Leo.

  17. Cera Way on August 11, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think Kanye is a Cancer rising with Leo Saturn in the second house, which would make sense to me as far as having a big brand name fashion line.

  18. Christine Hall on August 11, 2022 at 7:33 pm

As i listen i just thought about how the Sun can touch us externally by giving many of us, tan skin. and The Moon can touch us internally with emotions…
    Cancer/Moon-intravert…inner
    Leo/Sun-extravert-outer

Leo energy has a lot of of warmth, something rarely mentioned because of too much emphasis on the bad traits

I find it terribly amusing and very characteristic of Leo, that when I sent this to my Leo rising + moon mom, she said, "Is that the one I am?" And only agreed to watch it when I confirmed that the episode would discuss a sign that’s relevant to her own chart.

  23. Simply Amanda on August 11, 2022 at 7:45 pm

This episode was so so juicy with knowledge! I am a Scorpio Rising, Leo Sun, Aquarius Moon with a Venus Virgo and Libra Saturn/Jupiter and all three of you had me giggling and nodding in agreement throughout!

So-called “positive thinking” is an indoctrination technique via thought-terminating cliches.

Leo Sun, Moon, Pluto 12th house Leo Mars 11th house. South Node in Leo 11th House. I hate my chart. Virgo Rising feeling like I have a volcano inside but can’t express it.

  27. Tiina Kuvaja on August 11, 2022 at 7:53 pm

About fixed signs and fixed identity, ego: I´ve felt for a long time that Aquarius seeks their identity, Taurus is focus building their ego, Leo enjoys being themselves (the peak of ego), and scorpio is obsessed of killing their ego. Different perspectives, but all "obsessed" of themselves in some way.

  28. Melissa Calderon on August 11, 2022 at 7:54 pm

Very much enjoyed this episode as a Saturn in Leo in the tenth in Mutual reception to my sun Capricorn not the strongest of course but Leo’s have taught me self sovereignty the best. I am a hard worker and all my bosses love my work ethic.
