Labradorite is a beautiful feldspar mineral stone. Feldspar is a type of mineral that makes up over 50% of the earth’s crust. Labradorite is only one of many feldspar minerals. It is named after Labrador in northern Canada, one of the places where this stone can be found. It is often gray, but it can have flashes of brilliant colors of lavender, blue, green, red, gold, or orange. Many, but not all, pieces of labradorite have a characteristic called “labradorescence.” This is the name given to the beautiful, fiery, luminescent effect when light hits the labradorite stone and bounces off of the twinning structures within the stone. Twinning is caused when two different crystal formations join together within a piece of rock.
