Digging for SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTALS & AQUAMARINE at Emerald Hollow Mine | Gem Mining North Carolina

Digging for SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTALS & AQUAMARINE at Emerald Hollow Mine | Gem Mining North Carolina

This is episode 2 of our epic rockhounding road trip across North Carolina. In today’s video, we are heading to the small town of Hiddenite, North Carolina in the search for Emeralds, Aquamarine, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Tourmaline, Mica and so much more. This locality is home to over 60 different minerals including the extremely rare gem Hiddenite.
We start the prospecting adventure by doing some creeking, where you can dig and sluice in the mineral-rich stream on the land. Some parts of the stream are enriched with non-native minerals to create an educational experience and a rewarding dig for smaller children. So keep in mind that not all of what you find in the creek will be from the area. The helpful staff will give you insights on which areas to explore depending on your interests and they can identify your finds.
After prospecting the creek, we go to the public digging site called East Ridge Mining Area to find a vein of mica and a pocket of crystals. We end up finding fantastic specimens of Smoky Quartz and a small Aquamarine. We also find tons of Mica at this beautiful location.
Besides offering a public digging access to the native geological features, the Emerald Hollow Mine also has enriched buckets for purchase and is a host to educational field trips etc.
A huge thank you to the owner of the mine Jason Martin, his whole family and the staff for the amazing hospitality and generous experience they provided. They are great people and I highly recommend visiting this mine any time of the year!

Smoky quartz is my all time favorite crystal. I have quite a few but I want more always. They’re so relaxing. They really help with my anxiety. I always have one on me.

We were digging around that same pocket in mid October, and my son found a beautiful piece of quartz. I love that is
possible to pan and dig there. I walked away from the creek with a small piece of amythest and a small emerald. It’s an 8 hour drive, but I’m hoping to take a mining trip back there and to some of the other mines in the area next summer.

Need to take a squirt bottle with you. And when you see something take your time to get it out in 1 piece. Looks like you may have been the one that fractured that crystal with the prybar from underneath

Hello! My husband and I plan on taking a trip to Emerald Hallow Mine in a few weeks! I read what tools they provide to you on their page, but I’m a little confused. Haha it says no metal tools. Is that right? What do they give you to use exactly? Just so I know what we should bring! Thank you!!
