Aries Zodiac Sign in Astrology: Meaning and Traits

Aries Zodiac Sign in Astrology: Meaning and Traits

A deep-dive into the meaning of the zodiac sign Aries in astrology, and some of the traits and characteristics of people born with that sign prominent in their birth chart, with astrologers Rick Levine and Chris Brennan.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it is a masculine or diurnal sign, cardinal, fiery, and ruled by the planet Mars.

This is the first in a new series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into each of the signs of the zodiac, one per episode, in order to really understand their core meaning and significations.

Part of Rick’s credentials for this episode is that he was born with a stellium or cluster of planets in Aries, including the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the North Node.

During the course of the episode we talk about various keywords and traits associated with Aries, and also look at some birth charts of famous people who were born with different planets in that sign.

Some of the keywords we discussed were drawn from a Twitter survey:

1:32 minutes. Rick! Your few words on MARS IN THE TWELFTH HOUSE were golden! About "undoing". I have Mars in Aries in twelfth house. I’ve never heard, before, what you said. I did the fasting, meditation route you described. Would love to hear more! How about a video on this on your channel? Fantastic episode!

  4. Nadine Tribue on April 18, 2022 at 6:05 pm

Love this! As an Aries sun looking for insight on the sign, most of what I’ve found has been very simplistic and unflattering, but I am really loving this nuanced discussion. To the point you raised about being funny, I have been told I am funny but it is in an unconscious way. The more apt description of being cheeky, addressing a situation in the moment with a sly comment…bold but in a manner that doesn’t garner offense. Not premeditated-spontaneous.

Arise isn’t afraid of being seen as weak . We fight because of our temper and our physical strength. When we’re angry we don’t fear anything.
Aries is also the infant in the karmic wheel of life so we throw tantrums.
Because Aries is the infant we only fear is being unable to fend for ourselves. Like a wounded bunny in the woods.
Lady Gaga wore outlandish outfits because she hated the restrictions her record company placed on her . She said her only way to rebel was through her clothing. It a her giving them the middle finger. It was never about fashion. Aries is not that superficial to start fashion trends for the sake of fashion.
Aries is very deep and complex. We do all our thinks in our head and then express ourselves in a way that drives the point home because we don’t like wasting time on things we’ve already figured out -It’s a respect thing.

Would it be accurate to say the planets carry the energies of their home signs? That would help me understand their influence as they travel through the Zodiac.

Wow, with 1 hour and 15 minutes into this interview – a woman is finally mentioned. This is like sitting in the “asrtrology men’s locker room” and talking about famous Aries bros, No surprise that Angelina Jolie is the female example. I’ll listen for a few more examples of guys doing crazy shit but guys – do better.

Regarding "Aries are funny": i would say being funny is a lot about timing. Aries spontaneity has a lot to do with why we are funny.

    – love, a zero degrees Aries sun

  17. Rajiv Bhatnagar on April 18, 2022 at 6:22 pm

Great work Chris. I think most of the keywords for Aries have been covered. I can’t think of anything more. One thing I noticed in this podcast was your use of Mars and Aries interchangeably, e.g., Mars being in any sign, say Gemini, is giving the sign the Aries energy. So I come out with the notion that Mars is Aries and Vice-Versa. If that is so, where does Scorpio fit into this scheme?

  18. *Manapua* on April 18, 2022 at 6:24 pm

If Aries is the 1st Zodiac sign why is it consider the baby and not the eldest? Wouldn’t the baby be the 12th sign Pisces?

Another great exemple chart is Rihanna’s chart, with the Moon, Venus and Jupiter on the ascendant! And she’s very much all about that, I mean, the album’s names and songs like "Unapologetic" "Only Girl" "Rude Boy" etc fits so much the archetype for Aries. Recently she was nominated national Hero of Barbados, her country of origin. Even though she’s an early degree Pisces Sun, I think the Aries influence in her personality stands out in such a way that is so easy to spot on!

  22. Karen R on April 18, 2022 at 6:33 pm

So excited for this! Sun/Venus conjunct in Aries, moon in Scorpio, Mars conjunct MC in Pisces. Can’t wait to see this, Scorpio, and Pisces and the Aries sun in me doesn’t want to have to wait so long for them.

  23. Tina Moore on April 18, 2022 at 6:34 pm

I felt, even before Rick started talking about the repressed nature in Aries, that my Chiron in Aries represses that energy to move forth in the moment and get out of the way to allow movement. That stuckness I often feel in my life.

  24. Mj Hoyt on April 18, 2022 at 6:35 pm

Absolutely love this!!! My Aries son is always saying JFDI! Perhaps another keyword for Aries is challenging.

  26. Oviate on April 18, 2022 at 6:36 pm

I really like that Rick is the guest on this one because I’m using Uranus transits to delineate 8th house aries lots. I actually put finishing cosmos and psyche on hold, pushed up the Archai Journal Saturn edition before I revisit the Venus episode finding it’d make more sense to finish it when I reached revisiting the outer planet episodes. Plus, I had a cold over Easter not wanting to push myself to speed read.
Since I have no planetary placements in aries and libra mars rules the 8th.. I’ll spare the comments with libra mars passive aggressive keywords. The last time I did I stated Kool Aid Man. Lot of nemesis and necessity is there, I can’t help it. So is spirit so…
I’m going to give my half finished Archai Journal experience in a comment because it’s actually relevant to a topic I’m actually mildly into starting to take on very soon because the topic came up back to back with Saturn. I’m enjoying reading it so far where I plan to read all of them so what may sound like a criticism isn’t at all. I liked that the opening was excessively harsh while also finding it disagreeable where it triggered my inner childish hipster “irony” button where I didn’t know if the irony was intentional or just wonderfully ironic as said. “You’re doing the Saturn thing now…” I would describe Saturn as a child molesting priest, but it had great information knowing Saturn can have some taboo qualities. It’s a maturity theme after all. Later, another Saturn like take over with an argument that Saturn is feminine. Honestly, if you use Daoism Saturn falls into yin so Saturn would be feminine. An issue using Daoism is that yin and Yang have yang and Jin within them and it even has the same masculine/feminine, so the issue still exists. But, it has a fleshed out philosophy. I plan to read very thoroughly the Archai Journal essay to really evaluate the issue of the “gender” description because I won’t deny that even very intelligent people can have an issue with those descriptions. Natural law, and laws are very different. Science is feminine in that it’s the study of natural law. Peer review would be (another great example somewhat stated in the journal) similar to the senate where it’s deciding if a law is “lawful”. To Taoism/Daoism, the main symbolism of it is similar to the pisces symbol of dual fish. When reading the journal there was a point where I started to miss Alan Watts who has an effect on me that’s similar to aries traits mentioned here where I had his lecture on how over analysis leads to loss of touch with reality through over thinking in abstracts. Abstracts/symbols don’t actually exist in nature. Once I reached this point there was a fantastic essay by Becca Tarnas on this subject which was beautifully timed which may be useful as a read even with this series on zodiac signs. I still miss Watts wishing astrology had its own version. lol. Perfectly timed Jung quote reminder that the more you look at an archetype, the more it starts to change shape. This is done well in tao with the yin within the yang Vice versa.. the two fish are in a dance chasing each other unaware they’re part of the same thing. They are at odds, yet, compliment each other while being part of each other. The fish chasing its own tail.
Introversion/extroversion is probably more the realm of psychological astrology, but there’s no such thing as a pure introversion and extroversion, Jung even said a pure of either would be in an insane asylum. You’ll have different mixtures as Rick said. However, it’s possible the metaphor for a pure aries archetype is the + as opposed to -, but as the tao symbol shows there’s a – in the +. So there ends up a problem. With Campbell’s monomyth, when reading the Saturn revision essay I immediately thought “well, you could just take the Grimm Tales story about Hensel and Gretyl as a Saturnian myth..” you can, because it’s a very different myth than the Campbell slaying of the dragon with more feminine qualities, but also you have this weird blur where that monomyth is actually more accurate with, say, my own natal described monomyth than someone else’s Saturnian one. The hipster humor is accidental Saturnian projection which is really hard to break from as with any archetype. I’m thoroughly enjoying getting back into the Tarnas astrology though. Learning more about it as I go, I’m finding a personal alignment in views.
I’m looking forward to getting to the Uranus episode again and checking out Rick’s channel. I’m still on the moon, I got distracted by Saturn where I am relived my Saturn placement isn’t that bad. “Okay, I know exactly what that is and I am fully aware of that scheme”.
Since Rick mentioned it on the “minor” aspect episode. I did find a ufo gimbal sighting was when Uranus was lingering on my lot of nemesis degree which actually helped confirm my birth certificate time was right. I thought it’d be spirit, that’s definitely a curve ball. My reaction was “I couldn’t care less” and having to find it confirmed 5 years later as a gimbal encounter irritated me to have to entertain it. Discussions with a prominent investigative reporter about it, I said it only makes sense by that data that it’s linked natural phenomenon and linked to consciousness and referred him to many synchronicities that tied to a government study so on, so forth.. stated the military and aliens from another planet angle is better to stick with regardless of my own views along with some other scientists. I checked up on the subject a few months ago to find that angle I suggested I’d avoid is the one they ran with which is getting more interest, not less. It’s actually not surprising it’s linking to lot of nemesis. My favorite synchronicity so far is the one where I wanted nothing to do with deep diving into astrology when I had my routine “ugh, I just don’t care about Jupiter and the other planets” to find a coworker on lunch break (on 3rd) with a telescope looking at Jupiter when it was aligned with Saturn and the moon. He made me look at the moon. So I deep dove. That ended up being that my zodiacal release for Jupiter cancer 11th started the day I moved to 3rd shift but Saturn was transiting conjuct my natal moon. The much more difficult gemini release related to Mercury R in the 12th was over, it’s just getting that pesky Saturn out of Aquarius.
Rick said he likes those stories — his fault for the long comment. I need to test if my grandparents passed away with Pluto hit the lot of mother degree, but I do know Uranus hitting the lot of spirit was a big shift year. I just can’t specifically recall what. Hopefully people know they carry every zodiac sign and there’s a good chance an “empty house” may have one of the big 7’s. So it’s good to know each sign. Aries 8th with mars conjunct Venus and Pluto in libra is a really entertaining placement.
Glad to see Rick is in a much better mood. Oh, and I’m surprised not much has been said about the great conjunction testing faith in science as Rick talked about with reverse engineering scientific fact. That may actually be part of that transit which caught my attention reading more on Saturn.

My aries sun makes me an impulsive and risk taking adventurer. I walk fast, literally circles around my taurus friends. I usually see the big picture instantly and see thru bull shit even faster. When I am ready to leave somewhere, I have to go that moment or I will start pacing.

Aries moon I was told when my chart was read by a Jungian astrologer denotes an overbearing, non nurturing mother and a distant or absent father. Freud had this placement reflecting his negative relationship with women and his critical theories about the feminine that brought his relationship with Jung to an end, means the person raises themselves like an emotional orphan. There is a primal need to find the connection with the mother archetype. For women, work is needed to develop nurturing relationships with women, they need to trust and to forgive hard to do with such a deep wound. I keep track of people with this placement to see how they manage this placement, they tend to be inventive, independent, can be hurtful insensitive,
hard to reach, provocative. Bernie Sanders, Ellen Degeneris, Whitney Houston to name a few.
